South Carolina’s Congaree National Park is one of the least-visited parks in the country. But as the only national park comprised mostly of floodplains, this swampy paradise has one big thing going for it that its big name competitors don’t: The best time to visit is during the off-season. Congaree typically floods 10-12 times per year—and it happens most often in winter. Any significant rain in the upstate of South Carolina can cause a rise in water levels in the park without warning. While hiking through the flooded forest is impossible, the park’s best views aren’t from its forested trails. Visitors can still access a 2.6-mile elevated boardwalk to see views of river otters, “champion-size” trees, and myriad bird species. If that idea doesn’t float your boat, you can always take in the forest views from the seat of a canoe or kayak. So, would you visit? For more, check our link in bio. 📸: Mark C Stevens/Moment/Getty Images #nationalpark #nationalparks #southcarolina #...
