Doris “Dorie” Miller was an African American who worked as a mess attendant on December 1, 1941. The U.S. Navy did not train African American Navy recruits in combat but despite that, Doris leapt into action, rescuing injured soldiers and even manning an anti-aircraft gun to shoot at the enemies. For his heroic actions, Doris received the U.S. Navy Cross, becoming the first African American to receive the honor.
