Lutie Chiles, '40, began teaching at Jewell in 1950, founded the elementary education program, was a pioneer of in-service training in the Midwest and was a nationally-known scholar in early childhood education. She was recognized by the college in 1982 with a special Citation for Achievement saluting her generous hospitality to Jewell alumni and faculty. She was inducted into the college's Hall of Distinguished Teachers in April of 1990. Long after her retirement in 1977, Miss Chiles remained actively involved in the lives of her many former students. Elementary education majors remember fondly "Lutie's Letter," an annual newsletter sent to alumni.
Help us honor Lutie and many others at our
