Olive Thomas, '29, was a pioneer female student at Jewell in the early years of co-education. Being the first woman inducted into Jewell's Beta Beta Beta national biology honor society, she was also the biology assistant to Dr. C.J. Elmore. In 1936, she joined the nearly all-male faculty at Jewell. In her role of associate professor of biology for over 38 years, Olive taught every class offered in the department. She welcomed students into her office, known as "Olive's Pit," and served as dean of women. During World War II, she taught communication signals to Navy cadets on campus. Olive remained in Liberty after retirement and passed away in 2003 at the age of 97.
