JEWELL WINTER BREAK HIGHLIGHT: Ali Shappell, Jack Gordon and Mary Booton, along with mentor Steve Hemphill, ’78, spent one week shadowing the healthcare team at Macha Mission Hospital in Zambia. While in Africa, they watched a birth and surgery, cared for HIV and AIDS patients and learned firsthand about living in the bush. Students say they left with a better understanding of cultural biases, American privilege and the power of compassion.
