Their habitat, which they share with mountain gorillas, is surrounded by farmland and villages, which sometimes results in conflict between the monkeys and people. However, local communities also benefit from the fees that visitors pay to see golden monkeys in the wild. National Geographic Explorer Deogratias Tuyisingize, biodiversity research program manager for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, is studying the behavior of golden monkeys and working toward their conservation.
