José M. Hernández applied to and was rejected by the space program 11 times before finally being accepted. To bulk up his application, he became a certified scuba diver, obtained his pilot’s license and learned to speak Russian.
Hernández would become one of NASA's few Latino NASA astronauts, and his inspiring story is now the subject of Prime Video’s “A Million Miles Away,” with actor Michael Peña starring as the engineer and former astronaut.
Born in French Camp, California, Hernández’s parents were originally from Michoacán, Mexico. His family followed the seasonal harvests and as a child, he worked in the fields with his parents.
“I consider it an honor to have my life story told in the form of a film and by an exceptional director like Alejandra,” Hernández said. “I hope the film serves as a way of motivating many people to pursue their own dreams with the kind of passion I had to pursue mine.”
