You can hear the giggles across the classroom. You can also hear the students read to each other in funny voices. The students sit in chairs in the middle of the classroom at Ventura Park Elementary School on a recent evening. But these are not your traditional students. These students are a group of Latino parents who are practicing how to read children’s books to each other before engaging in a conversation about how they felt while reading to one another. The activity was part of one of 30 weekly two-hour sessions with Juntos Aprendemos, Together We Learn. The program is part the Latino Network, a nonprofit founded in 1996, and one of the beneficiaries of The Oregonian/OregonLive’s 2023 Season of Sharing holiday fundraising campaign. To donate to Latino Network or the Season of Sharing general fund you can text the code SHARE2023 to 44-321 or visit the link in the story.
