Get lost in the Art Deco details of Cincinnati’s iconic Carew Tower.
The 49-story skyscraper held the reigns as the tallest structure in Cincinnati for 81 years. Construction of the Carew Tower began in 1929, weeks before the beginning of the Great Depression. Despite economic setbacks, it took only 13 months to complete. Developer John J. Emery funded the construction of the Carew Tower alongside famous skyscraper-builder William A. Starrett whose company also built the Empire State Building. The Carew Tower was built to be a “city within a city” and became one of the first mixed-use developments at the time with retail space, office space, and a grand hotel - the Netherland Plaza Hotel.
One of my favorite pastimes is wandering around the Carew Tower and Netherland Plaza Hotel to explore the countless Art Deco details. I’m often asked what my favorite building in the Queen City is; the Carew Tower and its Art Deco charm take the crown for me.
