In honor of Black History Month, we wanted to take the opportunity to recognize important figures in our history at UM-Flint, as well as others and their accomplishments.
We will start with none other than a founding faculty member of the University of Michigan-Flint, hired by the first chancellor of our university as an associate professor of education, Dr. Alvin D. Loving, PhD. During his time here, Dr. Loving did lots of work with teacher training and spoke at local high schools about UM-Flint.
He trained over 400 students and had a profound impact on our community, and it had an impact on him as well.
Today, Dr. Loving’s legacy as the first African American professor and founding faculty at UM-Flint is marked by the Loving Lounge on the 2nd floor of the UCEN, a room for people of all disciplines and cultures to be together.
