On a plot of land outside Indianola, Cheri Lyon scooped feed and hunched down as a dozen birds pecked from her palms. Her mom, Ronda Lyon, looked on behind a fence as fall turned to winter.
Their father and husband, Tom Lyon, used to stand there, too.
But in January 2003, an argument between Tom Lyon and fellow farmer Rodney Heemstra led to one of the most infamous homicides in central Iowa. His death resulted in a near-decade of highly publicized civil and criminal trials that caused years of grief for Ronda Lyon and her children, Cheri and Bart.
As they approach their 21st Christmas without Tom Lyon, the mother-daughter duo agreed to a request to talk about their lingering loss together — and life after — in hopes of helping other families who have lost loved ones.
