Fifty-five years ago, the Apollo 8 crew became the first to witness an Earthrise.
On Dec. 24, 1968, astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders orbited the Moon in preparation for future landings on the lunar surface. As the Apollo spacecraft flew around the Moon, the astronauts were struck with the visual of our home planet rising above the horizon.
In this video, NASA’s Chief Scientist and Senior Climate Advisor Dr. Katherine Calvin sat down with Bill Anders to discuss the historic Earthrise photo.
