The beautiful city of Guanajuato, Mexico is filled with narrow cobblestone alleyways and discrete staircases. But underneath it all lurks an even more unique way to explore on foot: an elaborate network of tunnels. This intricate subterranean system offers visitors an alternative way to navigate the bustling city. Originally built in the 19th century by engineers trying to divert the rising river away from the city center, the tunnels were later repurposed as roadways to limit traffic. Now, people can wander the maze of 27 inbound and outbound tunnels for some of the most direct and leisurely routes to Guanajuato’s greatest attractions. For more on the history of the tunnels, the best spots to visit both underground and above, check our link in bio. 📸: Marco Bottigelli/Moment/Getty Images ✍️: Colleen Kelly #guanajuato #guanajuatoguide #mexicocity #city #underground #tunnels #undergroundtunnels #placestogo #travelspots
