A March is an old English word for a border district. Offa's Dyke is the original border line between the English and the Welsh.

It was Offa who ultimately rose to dominance, initiating the construction of a defining border dyke between two nations. Offa's Dyke, pays homage to King Offa, who reigned as the Anglo-Saxon ruler of Mercia.
