Bowl season is often a testing ground for new personnel, equipment, and more. This year, a handful of bowl games will feature new helmet communication devices, much like the NFL's system that has existed for decades.
Per Ross Dellenger of yahoosports, at least 14 bowl games will include one or both teams utilizing the new communications or smart tablets with replay on the sideline, or both.
Saturday's musiccitybowl will be one of them.
Maryland will equip six players - three on offense, three on defense - with the helmet speakers. Auburn, however, will not utilize the speakers. The Tigers instead will utilize the sideline tablets. Auburn agreed to Maryland utilizing the new helmet technology.
An SEC spokesperson told Yahoo Sports that no SEC team will utilize the speakers. Commissioner Greg Sankey stated that installing the new playcalling system in time for a bowl game was too quick of a turnaround.
