Author, agricultural attorney, and nonprofit leader Jillian Hishaw advocates for other Black farmers through the court system to help preserve their land ownership. 👏🏾
Years ago, Hishaw’s grandfather’s 40 acres of land in Oklahoma was stolen. An attorney who the family had hired to pay the farm’s taxes instead kept the money and sold the land.
Later, her family discovered that the home had been replaced by an oil pump, leading them to believe that knowledge of oil on the land was the reason for the theft.
Now, after receiving a law and master’s degree in agricultural law, Hishaw holds her own practice and an international nonprofit to provide legal assistance to Black farmers and prevent land loss.
"The legacy that my grandfather wanted me to leave is lost, but hopefully, through these farm cases, it can be restored,” she said.
