History was made on New Year’s Day as New York defeated Toronto in the first ever Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) game.
Tennis legend Billie Jean King, who serves as a PWHL Advisory Board member, performed the ceremonial puck drop to kick off the season.
She was accompanied by PWHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations and four-time Olympic gold medallist Jayna Hefford.
A sold-out crowd in Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto watched as New York’s Ella Shelton scored the first-ever PWHL goal on the way to a 4-0 victory.
The PWHL has six teams and has 24 regular season games scheduled in its inaugural campaign.
