The news came just in time for the new year, with 11 communities across the country receiving the designation. Only one locality in each state or territory can have the honor of exemplifying an area’s contributions to the World War II effort. “While Bedford County, Virginia, is best known for its losses on June 6, 1944, during the invasion of Normandy, its role in World War II, and the impact of the war on the city of Bedford, goes well beyond one single day,” the National Park Service wrote about the area’s designation. “From local families feeding American serviceman to manufacturing facilities producing vital military products to the troop trains that frequently passed through Bedford, World War II indelibly shaped the community.” Learn more about the 10 other newly named American World War II Heritage “Cities” at our link in bio.
