On Jan. 6, 1994, Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was attacked at the U.S. Figure Skating Championship.
An unknown assailant attacked Kerrigan as she left skating practice, hitting her with a metal pipe or baton, targeting the knee on her landing leg in an apparent attempt to knock her out of the competition.
On Jan. 12, The Oregonian broke the story that the FBI was investigating whether one of Kerrigan’s rivals, Portland-based figure skater Tonya Harding, was linked to the men authorities believed had planned the attack.
