8 years ago today, I was there to watch Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán paraded in handcuffs after he had been captured by Mexican authorities. It was a full circle moment. Just a year earlier, I was the first American in his prison escape tunnel. For those who know, in my 20s I cut my teeth covering the Mexican drug cartels. When I was first getting started as a reporter, I was in a drug cartel bar in Tijuana and survived and then that kinda led to my on-air career now on CNN. Sometimes I feel like my career is intertwined with El Chapo’s. It’s moments like this that make me so grateful to be a journalist and have a front row seat to history.
