During the 2021-2022 ski season, a whopping 88.7% of people who hit the slopes were white. For Black skiers and snowboarders, this lack of diversity can make it hard to find community. But against the odds, many individuals and organizations are trying to change a sport that is both overwhelmingly white and financially inaccessible.
Consider EDGE Outdoors in Utah, which provides free lessons to Black and Indigenous women, creating a space where they can learn in a safe environment, or Ski Utah’s Discover Winter program, which provides people of color ski attire, lift tickets, gear rentals, and four lessons at no cost. In its two first seasons, Ski Utah’s initiative saw more than 140 participants, and it continues to grow. For more, check our link in bio.
