“My grandmother doesn’t know who I am these days. She has dementia, but in this moment, she was the Connie Adams I grew up with.
My grandmother crossed
#AlphaKappaAlpha in the early
#1960s in the
#FAMU #BetaAlpha chapter.
She was an active member until the days her vision and memory started to disappear. (Sidenote: Her aunt was a Zeta, so she went against the grain and started a tradition in our family.)
When it came time to sing the
#AKAHymn at my cousin’s wedding, I was hesitant to have her join in because of her memory.
But she knew every word, and she was singing loud! (My grandma was a regular in the church choir.)
Singing the hymn holding her hand made me well up in tears.🥺
She doesn’t know I’m her granddaughter, but she knows I’m her soror.
Dementia takes so much from us, but the Alpha Kappa Alpha sisterhood still bonds us. 💚💗
I’m so thankful for this new memory with her.“
