Nearly 1,200 people spent the night Monday in warming shelters operated by Multnomah County and its partners as the wind chill dipped below 10 degrees for the third time in as many days. The 1,181 people served set a record, county officials announced. The county, the state of Oregon and nonprofits Cultivate Initiatives, Do Good Multnomah, All Good Northwest and Transition Projects together opened and operated 12 emergency shelters for anyone needing to get out of the cold. Before this month’s cold weather streak, the county’s highest number of people who stayed in emergency shelters was just shy of 1,000 on Dec. 23, 2022, county spokesperson Julie Sullivan-Springhetti said.
