City History Series pt. 2.5: seahawks For this design I wanted to honor Native American tribes in the Pacific Northwest. This design is inspired by #jeffreyveregge, an award-winning Native American artist from the Port Gamble S’Kallam Tribe in the Kitsap Peninsula of Washington. You can check out Jeffrey’s art with the link in my story. Another ode to PNW Native Americans is “Si’ahl” across the chest. Chief Si’ahl was the leader of both the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes and is the namesake of the city of Seattle. Also on the inside of the collar is “Sgwigwi” a Lushootseed word meaning “invite” and the original term for “potlatch,” as a reminder of who this land belonged to before us, and to give those who come to it now with the same invitation.
