‘Ae Fond Kiss’ is a poem by Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns. The poem was written in 1791 and describes two lovers parting. It was sent by Burns to a woman he loved just before she left Scotland, never to see Burns again. It is the most famous and widely acclaimed song to arise from Burns’ association with Agnes McLehose. Agnes was an educated woman whom Burns met in Edinburgh in 1787 when she was separated from her husband James McLehose, a Glasgow lawyer.
