It’s 6 a.m.
Inside the French Field House, voices in unison echo throughout the facility.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven eight.
It’s the Ohio State cheer team, and balancing on top of her teammate’s shoulder, ready to get tossed nearly 20 feet in the air, is Maria Law.
For the Ohio State cheerleader, the tasks of being a flyer rely on an immense amount of concentration, visualization, body strength, flexibility and trust, unlike any other sport.
“With our team, we are a very close-knit family,” Law said. “So, we have a lot of trust built within that. So, I always trust my teammates to catch me if I’m falling. Or vice versa, like I’ll always catch them.”
