LaTonya Moyer was an athlete coming up in Staunton. She was on the track team there and was pretty accomplished at athletics, especially running. She got out of school, finished college, started a career and in a nutshell did all the things people typically do as they turn the pages of their lives. When she got to her forties, she got the itch to get back into athletics. And she became interested in competing in triathlons. Her problem was, while she knew how to ride a bike she didn’t own one, and she didn’t know how to swim at all. Moyer chose to learn to swim so she could enter triathlons. What flowed from that was a quest to teach persons of color like herself how to swim. So Moyer made it a priority to teach largely women of color how to swim, and by now has taught hundreds of people to do so while also trying to push for better facilities and better swimming programs at public schools (another area she finds is lacking). #myvpm #virginia #swiming #swim #richmond #staunton
