Tragic news: We're only one month into the new year and already 30 Florida manatees have been reported dead. Scientists had hoped the "unusual mortality event" ravaging manatees was waning, but it's clear these gentle, slow-moving animals are still in crisis. The mass die-off began in 2021, when more than 1,000 manatees perished. Manatees are starving to death. Pollution and toxic algae are poisoning the water manatees live in and destroying the seagrass they depend on for survival. They're also threatened by boat strikes.
