Starting nearly a century ago, Northeast Sandy Boulevard began sprouting some of Portland’s most distinct pieces of novelty architecture. There was the milk jug. The big shoe. The towering oil derrick. Among the last examples standing? The Sandy Jug, a former filling station and luncheonette that spent the past four decades operating as a strip club. Now owned by Warren Boothby and Marcus Archambeault, the bar revivalists who previously preserved landmark local bars The Alibi, Sandy Hut and (most recently) Holman’s, the new Sandy Jug Tavern reopened on Monday in Roseway with a new concept they hope will be embraced by the neighborhood.
