While we may not have Punxsutawney Phil in Portland, we have our own large rodent who predicts the weather: “Stumptown Filbert,” Fil for short.
And Fil, who started forecasting the arrival of spring in 2020, isn’t a groundhog but a more location-appropriate beaver.
“Last year, Filbert predicted six more weeks of winter, and later that month we had a huge snowstorm,” Christina Parr, a keeper in the zoo’s North America section, said in a press release. “He may not be a professional furcaster but he’s right about half the time!”
On Friday, a sunny and warm day in Portland, Fil reached for the scroll that said “early spring.”
