“Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” There were very few voices at practice today other than our players. This was by design. Soccer is one of the most unusual sports in that we have no playbook to memorize, there are no timeouts where the coach scripts the winning shot, nor are there even common patterns of offense and defense. Nearly every moment is unique and it’s why it’s called the beautiful game. Soccer players must be prepared to read all those moments, react and make decisions all on their own. Nothing drives us more crazy when we watch youth team coaches screaming instructions for every single touch.
