For Black History Month, Howard University is highlighting the founders of niche, specialized entities that make The Mecca special grounds of education, connection and excellence. Alexander Thomas Augusta's achievements as the first Black medical professor in the U.S. once Howard's College of Medicine opened in 1868, and as one of the eight Union Army Black doctors, is a testament to resilience, courage, and dedication to his dreams and his community. Dr. Augusta was initially denied an education in medicine from University of Pennsylvania for being a Black man, but moved north and received his bachelor's degree in medicine from Trinity College in Toronto. Despite the obstacles thrown his way, he never lost sight of his goal to serve and uplift his race. "I was compelled to leave my native country, and come to this on account of prejudice against color...
