Communities from Intag Valley are defending the wild in court. The Provincial Court in Imbabura, Ecuador resumed the hearing for the Llurimagua mining project in Intag Valley, which could have significant consequences for the Intag-Toisan Key Biodiversity Area. Species like the vulnerable Andean Bear and Endangered Brown-headed Spider Monkey live in Intag. And the Critically Endangered Longnose Harlequin Toad and newly discovered Intag’s Resistance Rocket Frog are only found inside the mining concession. The project could have catastrophic consequences for both amphibian species. An environmental impact assessment conducted for the Llurimagua mining project did not include all of the threatened species in the Llurimagua mining concession, nor did it include information on how mining could affect water sources that local communities depend on.
