The note memorialized David “Shoty” Schacht, Cornelius “Corey” Pickett, David, James “Gibbs” Schott and Catalina — five former People’s Park residents who died since the park was barricaded last month. Lisa Teague, a People’s Park activist and community member, said they all passed within three weeks of the Jan. 4 fencing. Shoty was a Grateful Dead lover and avid traveler, according to Teague. Gibbs had a lovely and caring mom. Corey enjoyed taking his son to the zoo. David had two little dogs, and would frequently come back to People’s Park after he transitioned into housing. Catalina resided in the park back in 2021. “It could be any group of people from any city these days, but they were all community members and we grieve for all of them,” Teague said.
