Employees at Bob’s Red Mill and others in the food industry say Moore, who died Saturday at 94 at his home in Milwaukie, always led with compassion — exemplified by his decision not to cash in, even after his grain company had grown into a nationally distributed behemoth with dozens of products. Moore was born in Portland on Feb. 15, 1929. He was a child during the Great Depression and enlisted in the Army after high school. After returning home, he developed a knack for electrical and mechanical engineering while working as a technician. In the early 1950s, Moore married his wife, Charlee, and together they raised three sons. In the 1960s, Moore became fascinated by the mechanics of stone grinding after reading about old stone-grinding flour mills. He also grew interested in health foods — his father had died of a heart attack at the age of 49, and Moore became convinced a healthy diet could have saved him.
