The restored lobby in the century-old building of Yonkers’ Gorton High School is spacious, yet welcoming, carrying an air of old-time wealth and comfort. A football from a once-noteworthy victory, some trophies and newspaper clippings of gridiron exploits from the 1940s are displayed. On a recent day, Anthony Fava, a Gorton health teacher and coach of the Yonkers Force football team made up of players from Gorton, Roosevelt, Yonkers Montessori and Yonkers high schools, walked by the old memorabilia and greeted girls basketball coach Dawn Myers with a wide smile. He’s a fan of Myers and of her team, crediting her with building a “culture of commitment, accountability and togetherness.” That has led to something that just a few years ago was foreign to the Gorton girls basketball: Winning.
