In June 1953, Reverend T.J. Jemison led Black citizens of Baton Rouge in a boycott of the city's public transportation system. Those boycotting set up a system of fare-free taxis while the boycott was in place. The boycott lasted only about a week, but Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. used the Baton Rouge Bus Boycott as a model for the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott.
