Searching for fossils 🔎
Meet Tzevi Aho ’24, a geoscience major who spent the summer working with the Invertebrate Paleontology Department of the New York State Museum, researching an understudied geological formation local to their home in Jonesport, Maine.
This formation, called the Edmund Formation, is located on an island six miles out to sea. Tzevi was first able to explore it in the summer of 2022 and was immediately captivated by its surplus of brachiopod fossils. Throughout the summer, Tzevi examined changes in community structure following each eruption of the submarine volcano that created the Edmund formation, noticing significant differences in the fauna present at each site.
Tzevi said about their internship, “in addition to the scientific experience I am gaining, one of my biggest takeaways from this project has been a deep appreciation for the story of life and all that it has gone through in the course of time.”
Tzevi received an award from the Skidmore’s Summer Ex...
