With MLS kicking off tomorrow, we thought we’d take a look back at one of the best things the league ever did to open a season. Back in 1997, Bandai Toys and MLS teamed up to release a limited line of licensed figurines depicting the heroes of each original franchise. This set of action figures was meant to commemorate the success of the inaugural season, and usher in the league’s sophomore year with collectibles for a young and growing fanbase. With Carlos Valderrama, Eric Wynalda, Cobi Jones, and others forming part of this charming collaboration, the collection remains today as a window to the budding world of MLS in the ‘90s. Almost thirty years later, we’ve managed to get our hands on 9 out of those 10 figurines, but the great Hugo Sanchez still eludes us. It’d be nice to complete our Mount Rushmore, so if anyone has one, please let us know. We’re always open to trades.
