These heroes whose livelihood comes from working on ships, are typically contracted to work at sea for several months, years at a time. This includes the deckhands cleaning the engine room, to the chief engineer; and these boats can be anything from commercial fishing to interactional cargo - a very common job for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).
At the end of year, at least 24 Filipino seafarers were effectively abandoned after their ship docked in Westport. They were recruited by Manila-based agency Pescadores International and contracted by the US-based fishing company McAdams fish. Back in September, after four months of fishing for tuna all along the west coast, they docked in Westport to unload their catch. Since then, all but one captain left the boats while the fishermen themselves were not allowed to disembark because they were not properly prepared with US Visas.
