Have you ever come across the seashell-shaped Shell gas station on the corner of Sprague and Peachtree here in Winston?
Crazy cool fact: Our very own @erin.kwasnik is related to the men who built this iconic structure!
“My great-grandfather, Rad Burton, and great-uncle, Ralph Burton, owned a construction company named Burton Construction Company. My grandpa Garmon was just a kid when they built these stations, but he was always having fun on-site.”
The one shown here is the last one standing of eight others that were built as an advertising stunt back in the 1930’s — the days of the Great Depression.
In 1976, the service station was registered as a historic place and later was restored to its former glory by Frank Blum Construction. Erin and her grandfather returned for the ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating its reopening 🎉
Swing by to check out the museum inside!
