Oregon joined the federal government and several other states Monday in a lawsuit that seeks to block the proposed sale of Albertsons and Safeway to the supermarket giant Kroger.
The Federal Trade Commission and nine states, including Oregon, argued that the $24.6 billion deal that would combine two of the nation’s largest grocery chains would hurt competition and workers.
Kroger is the parent company of Fred Meyer and QFC, which each have a large presence across the Northwest. The Oregon Department of Justice said that combining those stores with Albertsons and Safeway would give the merged chain too much control over prices and wages.
