Come with us on a tour of the August Wilson House, the great artist’s childhood home located in the Hill District. Born in 1945, the playwright spent his first 13 years in the two rooms of this house with his mother and five siblings. It was here that Wilson grew up an incessant and curious reader and grew a fascination with the culture of the people he saw around him in the multiethnic Hill District. The house was derelict when August last visited in 1999 and was still so when he passed six years later. His nephew, Paul Ellis, helped have the house landmarked and restored to its current condition as an arts and cultural center. The University acquired the August Wilson archive in 2020 and closely collaborates with the August Wilson House and the August Wilson African American Cultural Center to preserve the artist’s legacy and educate the public about Wilson and the Hill District. Thank you Dr. Ervin Dyer for your time and for the incredible tour. #h2p #bhm
