Despite feeling “just as deserving as every other student” at Penn State, Serenity Myers said she feels pressure to keep up academically.
“I don't feel uncomfortable, but I do feel like I have to work twice as hard as my white peers,” Myers, a second-year studying political science and African American studies, said. “I have to make myself stand out other than being the Black kid on campus.”
Recently, a new report from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health found links between discrimination and mental health across 195 colleges and universities.
“(It’s) not just a Black student experience at Penn State or a Black student experience at a (predominantly white institution). That's just the Black experience in America,” she said.
