After coming across an Instagram post last spring, Kristin Anavette Swaby said she learned a unique space for Black dancers was coming to Penn State. “I always watched majorette dancing growing up,” Swaby, a fourth-year studying telecommunications and media industries, said. “I just knew I had to try out.” The Luxurious Lionesses, Penn State’s first all-Black women’s majorette dance team, blends jazz and hip-hop to uphold the culture of majorette dance. Swaby said it’s nice when the team comes together to “listen to music everyone likes” and learn dances that help them feel “confident and ladylike.” Read more about the group and members' experiences at the link in our bio. Editor’s Note: One of The Daily Collegian’s current news editors, Mercedes Hamilton, is a part of Luxurious Lionesses. She did not have any part in writing or editing this story. 📰: reececoren 📸: jackson.c.ranger 📊: sophia_montanye #pennstate #pennstatenews #pennstateuniversity #pennstateclubs #studentne...
