On this day in 1856, the Dominican Republic gained independence from Haiti. Dominican-born artist Bony Ramirez bonyramirezz often uses Dominican history and culture as reference points for his artwork. Childhood memories of the Dominican Republic and the complicated histories of the Caribbean inform his surreal narrative style.
Ramirez, born in Tenares, immigrated to the U.S. in 2009. As a student here in Newark, he spent a lot of time exploring our collection. We are thrilled to announce that Ramirez's exploration has culminated in the upcoming exhibition "Bony Ramirez: Cattleya," part of NMOAâs fifth iteration of our Global Contemporary series, opening on April 18! đș
