On Nov. 28, 1999, the first Transgender Day of Remembrance was held in honor of Rita Hester, who was killed a year before in Boston. Gwendolyn Ann Smith, though more than 3,000 miles away in San Francisco, refused to let Hester’s memory die. In 2005 the first documented Transgender Day of Remembrance was held in Cleveland. Now observed Nov. 20, the day reflects on the lives of those no longer with us while supporting those who are. Currently, at least 32 transgender individuals were killed in 2022.
