Since 2018, the SAO has been pushing for campus to provide bereavement leave for students experiencing the loss of loved ones. Soon, they plan to formally propose this policy to the Academic Senate for the first time. The policy would require professors to provide a minimum of seven days of bereavement leave during the semester when a student loses a loved one.
“It would provide students with the opportunity and the space to legitimately grieve their loved ones,” said ASUC Senator Aanya Niharika Schoetz. “It would lead to really tangible impacts on student performance.”
