UC Berkeley appointed Tedde Simon as its first tribal liaison and director of tribal relations, a new position within the Chancellor’s Office of Government and Community Relations.
The role is an acknowledgment of tribal sovereignty, the government-to-government relationship of the university — as a public educational institution — and sovereign tribal nations, according to a Feb. 23 press release.
She hopes this new role will foster relationships between the university and Native Nations, in ways that “support the vision, priorities and needs of Indigenous people as defined by them.”
