#OnThisDay 100 years ago, the Royal Theater opened its doors to the public. Formerly known as the Douglass Theater, the Royal Theater became the entertainment hotspot for African Americans in Baltimore.
Legends such as James Brown, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Marion Anderson, Louise Armstrong, and countless others graced the Royal Theater's stage with their presence. It remained opened until 1970. Today, all that is left is a memorial on the corner of Pennsylvania and West Lafayette Avenues and a field where local youth practice football.
